Our strategy
Our five-year strategy sets out Barts Charity's five strategic goals, vision and mission for 2022-2027.
Our vision and mission

Vision: At Barts Charity, we want to enable life changing improvements to health for the people of East London.

Mission: A charity with its roots in East London, dedicated to supporting improvements to healthcare and transformative research for local health benefit.

We work in partnership with the NHS, local research institutes and others who can help us achieve our goals and maximise our impact.

Our strategy: how we are advancing healthcare in East London

Over the last five years we have given £144m to fund transformative research and healthcare projects in East London. We will now build on this with a further £150m+ aimed at delivering life-changing improvements to health for the people of East London.

Running alongside this, we will focus on diversifying and growing our income as it is only through the generosity of our supporters that we will be able to realise our ambitions as a charity.

Our 2022-2027 strategic objectives

1. Research
We fund high quality and innovative research that enhances our understanding of health and illness and has the potential to improve and/or save lives in East London.

2. Healthcare
We facilitate transformation to patient care and support for our dedicated NHS staff, primarily focusing our efforts at Barts Health.

3.Fundraising and Communications
We will transform our approach to fundraising and significantly grow revenue to enable us to achieve our ambitions for our mission. We will inspire greater support by communicating about the people and projects we fund and the impact they make.

4. Endowment

We manage our endowment to ensure we take full advantage of potential opportunities to deliver our mission, now and in the future

5. How we work
We set ourselves high standards for how we operate and aim to maximise the impact we make with our resources.

Looking back
Over the last five years we have given £144m to fund research and healthcare projects which are achieving significant impact. Highlights of our funding include:

  • All Barts Health hospitals now have a charity-funded, dedicated staff wellbeing space to support NHS staff.
  • Strategic investment into cancer research has enabled significant advances in a number of areas including the understanding of drug-resistant cancer cells.
  • The Women’s and Neonatal Unit at Whipps Cross Hospital has been rebuilt and modernised to improve the experience of women and their families in East London.

Read more about the impact of our previous funding in our full 2022-2027 strategy document.

Central to our 2022-2027 strategy is the importance of our strategic partnerships with Barts Health NHS Trust and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London.
