REAL Health project – a learning health system 

Our £2.2m funding will expand a nationally leading initiative in North East London to use data science to improve health outcomes.  

We’re dedicated to

Supporting the SMD Clinical Effectiveness Group which has developed a data platform that is used by hospital and GP clinicians across NE London covering over 2 million people.  

The difference we’re making

  • Giving clinicians across the NE London healthcare system access to wider, more joined-up healthcare data that can inform their real-time decision making 
  • Supporting three research projects in cardiovascular disease, asthma and children's health 
  • Embracing the latest technology in health data science  and data analysis to target 
    • reducing heart attacks and strokes by over 400
    • reducing asthma attacks and admissions by 10% 
  • Linking key health information from primary school records to GP and hospital records to inform new strategies for obesity management 
  • Demonstrating how big data projects like this can drive improved outcomes at scale and at speed by delivering the target results within just three years

What the researchers are saying

We have pioneered an integrated data platform providing a foundation we can build on to improve service delivery still further. The importance of these ‘big data’ initiatives has already been recognised by NHS England, and the REAL project will deliver vital new research opportunities for computer and life scientists at Barts Health and Queen Mary University, London.

Funding extraordinary healthcare

The platform uses anonymised data and is already helping areas such as Newham and Tower Hamlets rank top in the country for clinical performance measures, despite being some of the country’s most deprived areas.  The team’s ambition now is to scale up the amount of data collected yet further and evidence how an integrated health system can save lives and inform policy.
