East London Genes and Health

We are funding East London Genes and Health, one of Europe's largest community genetics projects.

We’re dedicated to

Addressing the health challenges of two of East London's largest ethnic populations through the creation of a genetic database.

The difference we’re making

  • Understanding why Pakistani and Bangladeshi populations of East London are at a high risk of developing conditions like heart disease and diabetes
  • Supporting the ambitious East London Genes and Health project which aims to collect genetic data from 100,000 volunteers of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage
  • Creating a database of genetic information and anonymised health records that can be a valuable resource for researchers
  • Developing new treatments and ways to prevent disease in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities thanks to this genetic database
See how you can make a difference too

What the volunteers are saying

“Pakistani and Bangladeshi people have lots of genetic problems.  If the doctors can find medicines and cures, it will be a gift to the coming generation.”

– Mr Rao Muhammad Aslam, Pak Cultural Society and ELGH volunteer

Funding extraordinary healthcare

Started in 2012, the project has recently recruited its 26,000th volunteer.  But there is still a long way to go if it is to reach its target of collecting genetic data from 100,000 people.

If you are of Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage and would like to volunteer for the project (or know someone who might)  go to the East London Genes and Health website to find out more.
