Last week saw the unveiling of a plaque at Whipps Cross Hospital to celebrate the wonderful support from the mayors of Waltham Forest over many years.

Their continued support – dating back as far as 2000 – has improved the lives of patients across all areas of health treated at the hospital, from cardiac and maternity to diabetes and cancer.

Support from the local community is crucial in enabling us to do more for patients, and we are hugely grateful for everything they’ve done and continue to do for local residents.

The Worshipful Mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Yemi Osho, said:

"I was delighted to be asked to unveil the plaque for all past mayors for their charity contributions to Whipps Cross Hospital and Barts Health. It really brought home just how strong the link has been between Whipps Cross and Waltham Forest mayors. I feel privileged to be continuing that link with my support of diabetes care at the hospital."

Alan Gurney, Managing Director of Whipps Cross, also spoke at the unveiling:

“It is thanks to your generosity, passion and energy that hospital patients, their families and the local community are benefiting from enhancements in healthcare.

“An exceptionally strong relationship has existed between the Waltham Forest Mayoralty and Whipps Cross Hospital for many years and we’re very grateful for the extraordinary support all mayors have shown.”

Mayors who were celebrated at the event included:

  • Cllr Farooq Qureshi, who chose to support the Cardiology Unit
  • Cllr Liaquat Ali MBE, who supported the Diabetic Centre
  • Cllr Anna Mbachu, who supported the Special Care Baby Unit
  • Cllr Masood Ahmad, who helped fund ultrasound equipment
  • Cllr Peter Herrington, who supported bowel cancer treatment

And three mayors who are sadly no longer with us:

  • Cllr Mohammed Nasim (represented on the day by his family), who supported the Cardiology Unit
  • Cllr Mohammed Fazlur-Rahman, who supported the Diabetic Centre
  • Cllr Nadeem Ali (represented on the day by his father, Cllr Liaquat – above), who supported the Gastroenterology and Respiratory Unit

To all mayors mentioned above, a huge thank you from all of us for everything you’ve done. The legacy of your work has made a lasting difference to healthcare in your local hospital and community. We look forward to continuing the relationship in years to come.
