Delivering stellar results in the fight against cancer

The latest radiotherapy equipment – including a linear accelerator machine nicknamed ‘Saturn’ – is helping to save the lives of hundreds of patients with cancer.

We’re dedicated to

Giving patients and staff access to the latest equipment to ensure treatment is most effective.

Saturn, leading technology used for treating all forms of cancer, was funded with generous support from the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons.

The difference we’re making

  • Funding state-of-the-art equipment, in turn helping to create one of the best-equipped radiotherapy centres in the UK at St Bartholomew’s Hospital
  • Providing a whole host of benefits to patients with cancer, including shorter courses of treatment and fewer side effects – Saturn delivers highly precise X-ray targeting, meaning more treatment can be delivered more safely and accurately
  • Increasing capacity for the radiotherapy department, meaning more patients can be treated

What the staff are saying

“I can’t thank the donors enough.

“They’ve given us the tools to treat more people in more ways and with more success than ever before.”

- Dr John Conibear, Consultant Clinical Oncologist

Funding extraordinary healthcare

In the time that it’s been in use, Saturn has helped to deliver over 26,000 radiotherapy sessions (in the last six years), and 4,000 sessions in 2016/17.

25 patients a day are now treated with Saturn for all forms of cancer. One patient, treated for breast cancer, spoke of her gratitude following treatment:

“It’s a hammer blow to be told you have cancer, but I walk out of here knowing I’ve been cured.”
