Patients on Maple Ward at Newham Hospital have a sunny new seating area to enjoy a break from the ward and hospital environment.

The terrace on the second-floor orthopaedic ward features a range of chairs, tables, benches and specially-sourced planting – including a Maple tree.

All the seating has been specifically adjusted to the correct height to make it accessible for patients with mobility difficulties.

The renovation comes just in time for patients to enjoy the tail-end of summer, with views out across London from the terrace.

One patient said: “This area is perfect. I’m really worried about my sister having an operation. It is perfect to take my mind off the situation.”

Mark O’Halloran, Ward Manager (pictured, right middle, with staff from the ward), said: “This is exactly the impact we were hoping for. It’s important that patients and their relatives feel as comfortable as possible on the ward.

“Our thanks go to Barts Charity for helping to make this possible.”
