Objects

Barts Charity aims to innovate and improve patient care, medical research and education and achieves these aims by the raising, investing and granting of funds. The Charity’s objects are contained in a Scheme dated 1 April 2011 and are:

Those charitable purposes for the public benefit stated in sections 220(3) and 220(5) of, and paragraph 10(1) of Schedule 4 to, the National Health Service Act 2006, namely for such purposes relating to:

  1. Hospital services (including research);

  2. The Health Service including any part of the Health Service associated with any hospital;

  3. The Barts and the London NHS Trust (including the purposes of any specific hospital or other establishment or facility at or from which the services are provided by the Barts and the London NHS Trust). NB Barts and The London NHS Trust is now Barts Health NHS Trust. Click here for link.

The Scheme also includes 4 Special Purpose Charities, which each have their own objects and are registered as subsidiaries of The Charity with the same charity registration number.

The beneficiaries of The Charity are the people receiving medical care, attention or treatment at the following establishments:

Barts Health NHS Trust hospitals, which comprise:

  • Barts in the City

  • The Royal London Hospital

  • The London Chest Hospital

  • Newham University Hospital

  • Whipps Cross University Hospital

Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry (The Medical School - Part of Queen Mary University London); and

St Bartholomew School of Nursing and Midwifery at City University.

The Charity also assists Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust (including Mile End Hospital), Newham Primary Care Trust, City and Hackney Primary Care Trust and East London NHS Foundation Trust with the management of their charitable funds.

Trustee

With effect from 6 August 2010 the sole trustee of The Charity is the Barts Charity Trustee (The Company). The Company is a company limited by guarantee and registered in England and Wales, number 7168381. The Company is also a charity registered with the Charity Commission, with the same number as The Charity. The individuals who are appointed as directors of The Company are also known as "Trustees" and constitute the Board of the Charity.
